President Bharrat Jagdeo is scheduled to leave the country tomorrow for the United States on his first overseas mission since becoming head of state of Guyana.

A statement from the Office of the President said Mr Jagdeo will return on October 2, and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds will perform the duties of president in his absence.

The President will make his inaugural speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday in New York. While at the United Nations, President Jagdeo will attend a conference on Small Island Developing States before leaving Washington for high-level meetings with executives of multi-national financial institutions, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

A reception in his honour has been planned at the headquarters of the Organisation of American States (OAS), the statement said.

US senator John Sampson will host a meeting between the Guyanese President and West Indian business and political leaders.

In Brooklyn, President Jagdeo will meet the Queen's College Alumni Association and will hold a public discourse at Medgar Evers College.

The President will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Clement Rohee, Political Adviser to the President Kellawan Lall, and Presidential Adviser on Science, Technology and the Environment Navin Chandarpal.

The entourage will be joined by Guyana's Ambassador to the United Nations, Rudy Insanally and Ambassador to the United States and OAS, Dr Odeen Ishmael.
