A three-man delegation from Maryland, USA, yesterday met Agriculture Minister, Reepu Daman Persaud and had discussions on possible investment in the sustainable agro-industrial development of the Intermediate Savannahs.

A press release from the Minister's office stated that the delegation included Henry Virts, Secretary for Agriculture in the State of Maryland; Errol Small, Director of Marketing, Maryland Department of Agriculture and John Graham, a Business Consultant from Washington DC.

According to the release, the visit is of an exploratory and investigative nature to identify areas of mutual interest and technical co-operation for the development of the Intermediate Savannahs.

Coming out of this visit it is intended that linkages will be developed between the appropriate institutions in the Ministry of Agriculture here and the Department of Agriculture in the State of Maryland.

These linkages, it is envisaged, will facilitate technical exchanges in the areas of agriculture and sustainable resource management that can benefit both parties in the long run.

The release also noted that in the operation and implementation of any proposed developmental activities, the interests, resources and skills of the Maryland Department of Agriculture will be coordinated with the efforts of Guyanese developers from the private and public sectors.
