VCT Evening News to continue - Vieira

Managing Director of Evening News, Tony Vieira, has said that the fate of his evening newscast aired on VCT Channel 28 is Hobson's choice.

He made this remark while speaking yesterday to Stabroek News and noted that he had been besieged by numerous persons from across the country who view the newscast and who are asking him not to take it off the air.

As a result, he said that he did not intend to take it off the air even though his advertising revenue was still not enough to keep the operation going.

But he said that "he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't."

Earlier this year Vieira announced that Evening News, the forty-minute newscast aired six nights a week on Vieira Communications Television (VCT) Channel 28, would be off the air because it was being starved of advertisements by the Government, a charge which the government had denied. The newscast has come under attack by the government for its alleged pro-PNC bias and Vieira believes that is the reason why it is being starved of advertisements from government agencies and why pressure is being applied to businesses to prevent them from placing advertisements with VCT.
