President Janet Jagan leaves Guyana today for further heart tests in the United States, a statement from the Office of the President (OP) said yesterday.

The statement said the President resumed duties after her recent illness and was awaiting the results of further tests done at the Eric Williams Medical Centre (formerly Mount Hope Medical Centre) in Trinidad.

"It has now been decided that she would benefit even further from a more comprehensive evaluation of her medical condition that would include use of state-of-the art cardiac imaging technology," the Office of the President statement said. Mrs Jagan is expected to return later this month after the indicated management programme, the statement added.

President Jagan took ill with chest and other body pains earlier this month and was rushed to the St Joseph's Mercy Hospital. She was discharged after a few days and then left for Trinidad for tests. The OP statement said that a "cardiac lesion" was not excluded from the President's recent illness. Prime Minister Sam Hinds will be performing the duties of president while Mrs Jagan is away.
