Prices last month increased by 0.3 per cent, taking the year-to-date inflation rate to 4.5 per cent, according to the Bureau of Statistics.

A release from the Bureau said that the increase in prices for a few items had been responsible for this increase in price levels. However, the price increase for June was expected to be much higher, given the effects of the public sector strike which blocked imports and exports.

According to the release, there were decreases in the prices of bora by 6.4 per cent, calaloo by 9.2 per cent, eschallot by 8.5 per cent and blackeye peas by 9.3 per cent.

But there was a 4.7 per cent increase in the fruits sub-group, and other non-food items contributed a minor increase in the consumer price index. This included gasoline which went up by 4.9 per cent and kerosene oil which moved up by 3.2 per cent.
