Police are investigating the alleged shooting of a policeman by Guyana and West Indies cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul at the Georgetown Seawall on Tuesday night.

Asked whether the cricketer would be charged, Commissioner of Police, Laurie Lewis, said the matter was being investigated. He said the policeman had sustained minor injuries.

A police statement said the policeman had received injuries to his left hand and that he had not been hospitalised.

According to reports, at about 11:00 pm Chanderpaul and a female companion were seated in his vehicle on the seawall in the vicinity of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company earth station, when he reportedly shot the policeman, whom he mistook for a thief. It was not clear whether the policeman was in uniform.

A police source told Stabroek News, that the policeman and others were on mobile patrol in the area, when they saw the vehicle and shone a light inside. The source said the policemen recognised the cricketer and had driven past when the shot was fired at the vehicle hitting one of them.

The cricketer reportedly told police that he did not recognise the men as members of the force and thought they were thieves about to attack him. He was arrested on Tuesday night and released on station bail and reported at the police station yesterday morning.
