A young man's throat was allegedly slit by his girlfriend on Friday night at the Stabroek Market square two days after they had separated.

Cleon Drayton, 23, of 169 Titus Street, Agricola, was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was rushed for surgery. The alleged attacker is in police custody.

According to reports, Drayton was walking in the vicinity of the 'Dread Shop' at about 2130 hrs when his alleged attacker emerged from a place of hiding and cut his throat with a knife.

The woman turned away and was about to get into a taxi when she was accosted by a police Impact patrol, which was in the area.

Drayton's mother, Claudette Drayton, said the young man was the eldest of seven children.

She said Drayton and his girlfriend were engaged last November after living together for about three years. According to the mother, the couple had a misunderstanding during last week and the girlfriend moved out of the house on Wednesday.

The mother said she was told that her son visited her nephew-in-law on East Bank Demerara on Friday where he had lunch.

The last conversation Mrs Drayton had with her son was earlier in the day when he told her he wanted to buy a suite of chairs for her.

She said she declined because she wanted to repair the house first. It was about 2340 hrs when the dreaded news was delivered to her that her son was dead.
