President Bharrat Jagdeo says the days of irresponsible acts by media practitioners would be numbered if he were to get back into office as new laws will be enacted to set standards of decency for the media.

Jagdeo said that if strong action was taken now against certain media practitioners, they would have an excuse to cry discrimination and harassment and take advantage of the political situation. However, he promised that the broadcasting act would be in place soon after he returned to office.

"The people of this country deserve that," Jagdeo told reporters yesterday at a press conference.

Outrageous allegations and other excesses on television talk shows have been met with condemnation here and with calls for something to be done about them.

Jagdeo also felt that, from the reports received on recent unrest, the police have made every effort to keep law and order in trying circumstances.
