National holiday today for `Six Head' victory
State to give Lewis house, land

Today has been declared a national holiday in light of the victory of Andrew `Six Head' Lewis who yesterday won Guyana its first world boxing title.

President Bharrat Jagdeo in offering congratulations to the new champion has instructed that the state provide Lewis with a house and land upon his return, according to a statement issued by the Office of the President yesterday.

Calling on Guyanese to use the day to celebrate the victory and honour the country's new hero, Jagdeo said, "Let us all come together to celebrate this grand national achievement and show our champion how much we appreciate his victory." Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Gail Teixeira and Aide-de-Camp to the president, Major Francis Abraham - who represented the head of state - witnessed the fight held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Teixeira, according to the statement, communicated the president's congratulations to Lewis. Jagdeo was to speak to Lewis yesterday.

President Jagdeo who watched the fight in the company of residents of Albouystown, from where Lewis hails, was said to have been overjoyed and excited at `Six Head's' victory. Jagdeo stated that Lewis had done Guyana proud and it was a victory for all Guyanese.
