The Amerindian Peoples Association (APA) says it is not affiliated to any political party and is concerned at its name being used by parties in the election campaign.

A press release from the APA stated: "Amerindians should freely choose the party they would like to support. The organisation also feels that those parties contesting the elections must bear in mind Amerindian concerns including the right to be part of the decision making process at the highest levels, the right to traditional and ancestral lands, the right to adequate health care and the right to a suitable education."

The release concluded: "The APA is willing to have discourse with all political parties that are willing to address these and other issues affecting Amerindians in Guyana."
