Sharon Lall, the Guyana Chronicle reporter ensnared in the aircraft stabbing incident has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

However, she did not attend court yesterday when the case was called before Chief Magistrate, Paul Fung-A-Fat. According to her attorney, Priya Manikchand, the 21-year-old journalist is "clinically depressed".

Fung-A-Fat refused her bail but ordered that she be kept in the Psychiatric Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital and her passport lodged with the police. Lall is accused of wounding Yacoob Mazaharally and Vidya Gooray with intent to murder on January 29, at Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara.

Reports stated that on Monday afternoon, Lall boarded a Cessna 182, piloted by Mazaharally nicknamed `Joey' with a knife concealed in a newspaper. About 15 minutes into the flight, she pulled it out and stabbed him behind his neck.

Gooray, another passenger in the four-seater aircraft, witnessed the scene and attempted to subdue Lall to prevent further bloodshed. In the ensuing fracas, she was also injured. During this commotion, Mazaharally safely returned the aircraft to the Ogle Airstrip where he disembarked and Lall was apprehended by Air Services' staff. Police intervened and she was arrested. Lall also suffered a swollen eye.

Her case continues on February 12, at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate's Court.
