Queen's College (QC) has obtained some $2 million worth of books, equipment and furniture for use by students and staff from the school's Board of Governors. The materials, which will boost the work of the school's administration, the Home Economics and Allied Arts departments, as well as the library, were handed over at the school by head of the Board's Curriculum/Academic Support Sub-Committee, Dia Persaud, during a special assembly on Monday morning.

At the assembly, school principal Wendel Roberts encouraged the staff and students to properly utilise all the assets acquired for the enhancement of education and their comfort.

The Guyana Information Services (GIS) in a release quoted Board Chairman Ronald Alli as saying that the learning materials and equipment were provided in response to priority needs identified in the various departments by the school's administration and the heads of departments.

All efforts are being made to deliver the required materials in a timely manner to ensure a more effective delivery of the school's curriculum, Alli said.

The items for the Home Economics Department include a gas stove, a dinette set, a vanity, a microwave oven, a food processor, crockery and several kitchen utensils. These will be used immediately by students preparing their School Based Assessments (SBAs) for the CXC examinations this year. Fifty essential textbooks valued at about $190,000 were procured for the library and the school's administration received a set of chairs.

Specially-designed art tables, tools and materials, including a guillotine, were handed over to the Arts Department. The Visual Arts and Craft, Physical Education and Music Departments are now housed in the building which formerly accommodated the Allied Arts Unit of the Education Ministry. The board renovated and refurbished the building and returned it to QC last term.

Alli noted that over the last 18 months, the board has made a concerted effort to upgrade the science department with modern laboratory equipment consistent with teaching and examination needs. The sum of $18 million was spent on this exercise.

Meanwhile, there are plans to link the school with the Internet, Alli added.
