Friday marked 148 years since Chinese arrived in Guyana

Friday marked 148 years since the first Chinese arrived in Guyana.

A release from the Guyana-China Friendship Society said the Chinese arrived on the Glentanner on January 12, 1853, and most of them went to Windsor Forest where they resided and started to make a worthwhile contribution to Guyana.

The release noted that Guyana's first president was Arthur Chung and also that the country's first scholar was Phillip Chan Choong. The first Chinese church was opened in 1875 on November 25, and on March 23 of 1903, 870 acres of land was granted to the Chinese at Hopetown. Also the first Chinese Lodge named Silent Temple Lodge was formed in 1907. According to the release, the Chinese Association was formed in 1920.
