Contractors to bid for $900M urban upgrading projects
Stabroek Market canopy among works earmarked

The Ministry of Local Government has identified 27 projects in the six municipalities to be done as part of the first phase of the Urban Development Programme funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Thirteen pre-qualified contractors will be invited to bid for the contracts for the projects, which are estimated at $900 million. Bids close on September 19.

The Urban Development Programme is a five-year initiative by the government and the IDB to provide technical assistance and institutional strengthening to the six municipalities, the ministry, the valuation office of the Ministry of Finance, the Programme Execution Unit and to finance the rehabilitation of urban infrastructure and services.

Government is to contribute US$5 million in addition to the US$20 million from the IDB to finance the programme.

Under this first phase, in the city, repairs will be done to the canopy of the Stabroek Market. A new internal electrical distribution system is to be installed and a new sanitary block constructed.

Norton Street and its drain from Mandela Avenue to Louisa Row will also be rehabilitated. Robb Street and its drains will be repaired from Robbstown wharf to Orange Walk. These projects, according to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government Pulandar Kandhi, will cost an estimated $288 million. At New Amsterdam, a new superstructure will be erected in some sections of the market as well as a new sanitary block.

Pitt Street, also in New Amsterdam, is to be constructed of asphaltic concrete with new concrete drains.

The eastern side of the Rose Hall town hall will be extended. New Market Street and drains and the West Sideline road and drains will be repaired. The Number 79 market at Corriverton will have new sheds and its flooring raised. Cemetery Road is to be relaid with asphalt and new concrete drains and greenheart revetment installed. Asphaltic concrete work will be conducted on Rampoor Street. Projects in these two municipalities were estimated at $177 million.

Under the programme, the Wismar market will be outfitted with a new roof and a new sanitary block. The Mackenzie Market will have a new roof, new floor and a sanitary block. Mora Street will be repaired with asphaltic concrete and will have new concrete drains constructed. The same work is to be done on the One-Mile Canvas City road and drains.

Projects in Linden are estimated at $218 million.

Anna Regina is to have a new concrete Town Hall. Mandir Street, White Carib Road and Market Road will be overhauled with asphaltic concrete. The Anna Regina projects are expected to cost $99 million.

The 13 pre-qualified contractors are R.Bassoo & Sons, DAX Construction Co, Rayman Bros Inc, N. Nauth and Sons, Rameshwar Ramchand, B&K International, S.A Nabi &Sons, Seereeram Bros, D&T Construction Ltd, Dipcon, Compustruct Engineering Ltd and, Courtney Benn Construction Company.

Kandhi said yesterday at a press conference that the design and supervision of civil works were contracted to local consultants for a sum in excess of US$240,000. Alta Canadian Geomatics is the management consultants for over US$2.85 million.

The Project Execution Unit of the Ministry of Local Government will disburse the loan. A monitoring committee consisting of the mayors of the municipalities and chaired by Kandhi was established. The projects were identified as priorities by the various municipalities. Work is expected to start shortly.
