The likely establishment of an aluminum smelter in Trinidad could spell a major boost for Guyana's bauxite exports.

According to a Guyana Information Services (GIS) release, President Bharrat Jagdeo told workers of the bauxite mining community of Kwakwani that the government had had talks with "Petrotrin (a petroleum company in Trinidad and Tobago) and they are working with a few people to establish an aluminum smelter in Trinidad and Tobago.

When that happens our bauxite industry will have a great future because they will be looking to buy bauxite from us."

Jagdeo also mentioned government's moves to break the telephone company's monopoly. He pointed out that if there is competition in this sector 15,000 jobs a year could be created in Guyana in the area of data processing.

In his trip to Region 10 last week, Jagdeo visited Bamboo Landing, Upper Berbice River, and a sawmilling complex employing 150 persons where he officially commissioned new equipment valued at $36M.
