Suriname has advertised for the third time in an international publication in order to attract investors, according to the Thursday Internet edition of De Ware Tijd.

An eight-page insert has been published in the French newspaper Le Monde, containing an extensive description of Suriname's possibilities, and illustrated with many photos. Under the title: 'Suriname, Untapped Potential,' Surinamese experts tell of the investment opportunities Suriname's economy has to offer.

The Dutch-speaking north-eastern South America country currently in a dispute with Guyana on the CGX oil rig, still depends on exports of bauxite, aluminium, rice and bananas. The possibilities of eco-tourism are also highlighted.

The supplement says there are great investment opportunities in gold mining and offshore oil drilling, and in the expansion and diversification of agriculture and fisheries. "The government has started reforms and development programmes for the banking and insurance sectors, infrastructure and telecommunications," Le Monde says of Suriname.

In a series of advertisements, investors are invited by Telesur, the ministries of agriculture (LVV), public works, trade and industry (HI), the central bank and Staatsolie.

In its section, the central bank said that new legislation offered foreign investors the possibility of obtaining rights to search for and win oil and other natural resources. HI also points to favourable tax arrangements being offered.
