Deputy Commissioner of Police Floyd McDonald (DSM) was yesterday sworn in to act as commissioner in the absence of Commissioner of Police, Laurie Lewis, who is currently on three weeks leave abroad.

McDonald, who is also crime chief, took the oath before President Bharrat Jagdeo in the Credentials Room, Office of the President. Responding to whether the swearing in was a precursor to him being appointed commissioner, McDonald said it was "premature to say" or "make that assumption" at this time. McDonald disclosed that this was the third time he had been sworn in to act as commissioner.

After it was pointed out that acting police commissioners were sworn in before but never at a formal ceremony before the media, President Bharrat Jagdeo said that he thought "it was necessary".
