Colgate Palmolive closing after 40 years

After 40 years of operating in Guyana, Colgate Palmolive (Guyana) Ltd is closing its doors here.

Sales and distribution of the company's products will be handled by Geddes Grant Ltd and Distribution Services Ltd (DSL).

According to an advertisement which appeared in yesterday's Sunday Stabroek, the Guyana branch would be closed as of May 31st.

The advertisement said Colgate Palmolive (CARICOM) is restructuring its operations across the Caribbean Region in order to better service its customers and consumers, and to remain a cost effective supplier.

"This restructuring will result in the closure of Colgate Palmolive (Guyana) Limited, as of May 31 st 2000," the notice of closure said.

The company advised that effective June 1, 2000 the sales and distribution of its products would be handled by Geddes Grant and DSL.

Toothpaste, toothbrushes, Palmolive, Protex and Irish Spring soaps and Ajax scourer are some of the company's products that have become household names in Guyana.
