The Guyana Police Force has been mandated by President Bharrat Jagdeo to assist in bringing down the level of violence against women and children.

The charge was issued yesterday during the feature address by the President at the opening of the Annual Police Officers Conference, Police Officers Mess, Eve Leary.

Mr Jagdeo said that he took a very serious view of the increasing violence against women and children, especially the abuse of the latter, and called on the police and Chancellor of the Judiciary Cecil Kennard, who was present, to deal with the matter seriously.

"The abuse of children must stop," the President stressed and expressed the hope that the judiciary and magistracy, acting within the context of the law, would seriously tackle the scourge.
