President Bharrat Jagdeo and his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez have reiterated their commitment to the Good Officer procedure undertaken by the Secretary General of the United Nations to settle the border controversy between the two countries.

A press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the leaders who are attending the South Summit in Havana, Cuba met yesterday and voiced their satisfaction with the establishment of the High Level Commission aimed at intensifying economic and cultural linkages.

It was further stated that the talks were held in a cordial atmosphere and the two presidents now hope to have their next meeting in Brazil in September.

Both leaders also noted a number of possibilities for furthering economic and functional cooperation in the areas of trade and technology which they stated would help to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

The opportunity was taken by the Guyanese Head of State to invite his Venezuelan counterpart to visit Guyana. A positive response was received, indicating that such a visit could take place during the last quarter of this year. Visits at other levels would also take place to promote good relations between the two neighbours.
