Three tourism enterprises have already secured booths at the upcoming Fitness Expo' 2000 which is expecting a number of overseas guests, mainly from the Caribbean and North America.

The fitness exposition, scheduled for June 2-4, is emphasising the strong links between fitness and recreational activities offered by travel and tourism.

And Roraima Airways, Lake Mainstay Resort and Baganara Resort owners, Evergreen Adventures, have signalled their intention to capitalise on the event, a recent media release from the Fitness Expo' directors said.

Directors Donald Sinclair and Carl Bacchus, in the release, said that sports tourism opportunities in Guyana appear ripe for development, given the increasing number and variety of international sporting encounters in the country.

The exposition is expected to provide an opportunity for tourism operatives to explore and deepen the tourism-fitness connection by promoting the benefits of stress management and fitness enhancement that accrue from tourism activities.

The fitness exposition will also allow the tourism industry to refine its role in sports tourism, and extend the tourism component in all international sporting encounters in Guyana.

In many countries, the release observed, sport is regarded as a major contributor to tourism revenue as athletes, officials and spectators travel, seek accomodation at hotels and guest houses, eat at restaurants, purchase souvenirs, use local transportation and visit various attractions.
