Edgar Garfield Gibbons, who was deported in error to Guyana as a Guyanese is to appear before a grand jury in Texas, USA in another seven to ten days, according public affairs officer for the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), Luisa Aquino.

Aquino who works with the INS Houston, Texas office told Stabroek News that the US Attorney had accepted the charges from the INS and a grand jury was to be appointed to determine whether he should be indicted.

She said too that towards the end of the week, they expected to have some "absolute, definite information" about which country he is a citizen of and whether any other law enforcement agency would want to bring any other charges against him.

Aquino said that Gibbons had been shifted from the contracted holding facility near the airport to a prison in Newton County, Texas which is about 300 miles from Houston.

Gibbons, according to Aquino, had been grilled for several hours by INS investigators and that he was still insisting that he was an American.

She said that the new prison is one where aliens who are likely to be detained for long periods are held.

Consul at the US Embassy, Vincent Principe, had told Stabroek News that Gibbons could face a number of charges arising from his claim to be an American citizen. He is also likely to be charged with falsely claiming that he was a Guyanese. Gibbons had denied that he had claimed that he was a Guyanese, contending instead that it was the INS which had insisted that he was Guyanese.
