President Bharrat Jagdeo said yesterday that he had directed an intensification of efforts by law enforcement agencies to deal effectively with speeding, overcrowding of mini-buses and making the use of seat belts mandatory, in the wake of Monday's tragic road accident.

A release from the Office of the President registered Mr Jagdeo's deep shock and anguish at the recent accident which as at yesterday had claimed 12 lives. Mr Jagdeo said he was "saddened by this tragic loss of lives, including those of our babies, in the continuing senseless episodes on our roads."

The President noted that "again another mini-bus is involved in this reckless carnage for which speeding is cited as a contributory factor."

The President expressed sympathy on his behalf and on behalf of the Cabinet to the many bereaved families who have lost loved ones. He also appealed to citizens to assist in making the use of the roads safer.
