Police are intensifying their manhunt for Andrew Douglas who was wanted along with the late Linden 'Blackie' London for a series of robberies, including the America Street and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) heists.

According to police, Douglas was one of the men who escaped along with London from a joint forces dragnet in a canefield on the East Bank Demerara after the America Street robbery. Several persons including a policeman were injured when bandits pulled off a daring mid-morning robbery on America Street last September. The men led police through city streets, firing as they went up the East Bank of Demerara.

Police have also linked Douglas to the NIS robbery. On January 10, the day pensioners were scheduled to be paid, two men robbed the NIS office, Brickdam of $13 million after threatening to blow up the place with two grenades. One of the men sat among the pensioners with a submachine gun concealed in a bag he had.

Last year the police issued wanted bulletins for Douglas and London. Rewards of $250,000 were offered for information leading to the arrest of the two men.

London was killed two weeks ago as he emerged from the Toucan Guest House where he had held off ranks from the joint forces in an 11-hour siege.

Addresses given for Douglas are 127 King Edward Street, Albouystown and 33 Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara. He had been released from prison in May 1995 after being sentenced for causing death by dangerous driving, break and enter and larceny and possession of house-breaking implements.
