The People's National Congress (PNC) is calling for an immediate, independent enquiry into the operation of the Guyana Police Force with "special attention to the numerous extra-judicial killings."

A press release on Friday from Congress Place in the wake of the killing of Linden `Blackie' London calls for an immediate cessation of the "nefarious carryings on by the police force and the known perpetrators must be brought to justice."

The release continues: "The police have vindicated those who have accused them of covering up their heinous acts. Notwithstanding what was seen by the public, the police have attempted to mask their acts, claiming that 'Blackie', having eluded them in the past, had to be handled in an illegal manner. However their jubilation over his killing tells a different story... of people who find joy in such acts... Not only have our law officers lost their sense of justice and fair play, they have also lost the human qualities of remorse and penitence."

The PNC said that it was time government took a stance on this matter, since it was government's responsibility to ensure that good governance and social order were maintained.
