Guyana is working towards collaborating with Suriname to field a combined team with the neighbouring Dutch speaking Republic to contest the Davis Cup tennis competition.

Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) president William Skeete said both Guyana and Suriname do not have full membership to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and it would be a good idea for the two countries to apply to play jointly in the international team competition.

He said an application has already been made to the ITF and approval could be had within two years. Skeete added that Guyana does not have the facility requirement for Davis Cup status, but Suriname has the number and quality of courts required for international competitions.

Skeete disclosed president of the Suriname Tennis Bond (association) Manody Hundori is working on the Suriname aspect of the venture.

Skeete added that the two countries plan to select teams to form the Davis Cup squad through team competitions involving the two nations.

He said both countries have a number of overseas based players who will be in contention for places on the final Davis Cup squad.
