D`EDWARD Mandir copped the first prize in the small category of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha Deepavali motorcade, the Sabha announced Friday. The $75 000 cash prize was donated by Neal and Massy (Guy Ltd).

According to a release from the Sabha, in the small category, Ganesh Persaud of Prashad Nagar captured the second prize of $60 000 courtesy of the New Building Society. Third prize in that bracket went to Little India Store of Water Street, and that float secured $50 000 donated by Pegasus, GUYSUCO and Lens. Muneshwar Travel Agency received the $40 000 donated by P&P Insurance and Barcellos Narine and Co. for capturing the fourth place.

The large category first prize, also $75 000, went to Lusignan East and West Radha Krishna Mandir. That prize was donated by Tony Auto Works. Better Hope Mandir placed second in that category and copped $60 000 donated by GUYSUCO, while third prize - $50 000 given by Toolsie Persaud - went to Rama Krishna Mandir. Fourth place went to Edinburg Hindu Mandir and they received $40 000 from the National Bank of Industry and Commerce (NBIC).

Trophies donated by Demerara Shipping Company Limited and A.P. Sukhai were also presented to winners, while other vehicles won consolation prizes donated by Scotia and Demerara Banks, Laparkan, Deloitte and Touche and Seepersaud Maraj. NTN, the first media house to participate in the motorcade, received a special prize.

President Bharrat Jagdeo made the presentations.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has extended congratulations to all those who participated in the motorcade, and to the business community who supported the event by way of donating prizes. The Sabha has also congratulated the Police for "an excellent job".

The creativity and innovations of this spectacular event surpassed all previous years and what was commendable was the orderliness and punctuality with which the motorcade departed the Shri Krishna Mandir in Campbellville. It ended at the LBI Community Centre Ground where thousands had converged to participate in the event.

"The festival of Deepavali has proven to be the biggest event transcending all barriers and creating an atmosphere of cordiality and harmony," the Sabha said.

The Sabha held motorcades throughout the coastal belt and each attracted large crowds and many beautifully decorated vehicles.
