LAWYERS for two of the men charged with executing the recent daring daylight cambio robbery in America Street, Georgetown made unsuccessful bail applications yesterday when the preliminary inquiry (PI) into charges against the duo began before Chief Magistrate Paul Fung-A-Fat.

The Court recorded the submissions by attorneys-at-law Basil Williams, representing Clyde Atwell, of Eccles, East Bank Demerara and Joe Harmon, for Toyin Anderson, of Lot 42 Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, but did not rule in their favour.

Mr Fung-A-Fat declared he would not grant the requests at this stage of the proceedings.

Anderson and Atwell are jointly accused, together with Andrew Douglas, of Lot 127 King Edward Street, Albouystown, also in the city or Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara and Lindon London called `Blackie', who is believed to have masterminded the September 22 heist.

Police are alleging that the four robbed Ramzan Bacchus of G$1.4M and stole, as well, in excess of G$3M, 36,490 pounds (Sterling), Cdn$4,040, TT$10,107, EC$1,155 and Bds$1,810, from Deodat Singh.

Five more allegations said the quartet attempted to murder Police Corporal Ewart `Toots' Hutson, Brian Nelson, Mubarak Khan, Vishu Narayan and Jermaine Brower.

Singh, proprietor of the robbed cambio, was the first witness to testify yesterday and Special Prosecutor Khemraj Ramjattan led him through his evidence-in-chief.

The prosecuting lawyer has informed the Court that he will be calling 11 witnesses at the PI which continues today.
