PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday said his Government is committed to working for the broadest possible unity among Guyanese and to consolidate their political and other rights.

The President, in saluting the seventh anniversary since the People's Progressive Party Civic (PPP/Civic) assumed office, praised the memory of the late Dr Cheddi Jagan "for his consistent struggles for democracy, and for the return to Guyana of majority rule."

In the statement, Mr Jagdeo also paid tribute to martyrs in the struggle, Jagan Ramessar, Bholonauth Parmanand and Walter Rodney.

"The PPP/Civic Government is a proud inheritor of the democratic traditions of October 5, 1992. We intend to continue the commitment for change, and to rebuild Guyana," the Head-of-State declared.

"October 5 is victory day for the entire Guyanese nation, of all forces and individuals who have fought the long battle for electoral justice under the universal principle of one man one vote, and at transparent and certified elections."

According to the President, in 1992, not only did the country win democracy but since then there has been a plural, representative, parliamentary democracy, fresh local government elections and the full recognition of human rights.

"When we say everyone has won as a result of our new democratic opening, we refer specifically to the immense goodwill that Guyana has enjoyed by returning to the fold of democratic nations. We have re-asserted our self-respect as a nation, and we are re-claiming a dignified role in the international arena," he added.
