A NEW YORK-based organisation of Guyanese is planning a series of activities to welcome the new millennium here.

Members of the Guyana New Millennium Home Coming Association (NMHCA) Guyana last week announced the activities they intend to host in December, along with more than 200 overseas-based Guyanese they intend to bring back home.

"No matter how long we live out of this country, Guyana is still home," Chairperson of the group, Ms. Pat Williams told reporters Friday at the Park Hotel, Georgetown.

"This is the perfect opportunity to quench that thirst of coming home."

Executive member Mr. David Howell who gave opening remarks at the media briefing, said the new Guyana Airways 2000 airline was sponsoring the fare structure for the December trip.

According to Howell, those travelling on the chartered flight December 17, will only pay a US$550 fare, US$100 less than the usual cost.

Williams said NMHCA will put out flyers and advertise on the Internet and television stations overseas, telling Guyanese of the offer.

Some of the activities planned for December include a medical clinic, medical supplies distribution, several toys giveaway sessions, a football match, a boat cruise and a grand finale cultural event.

Activities are to take place in different parts of the country, including Linden and Berbice.

NMHCA is also bringing in bands and calypsonians from overseas to feature at some of the functions.

The group is exploring the possibility of local calypsonians taking part too.

The overseas-based Guyanese organisation formed in January

has set up a local arm led by People's National Congress Member of Parliament, Mr. Joseph Hamilton.
