PRESIDENT Janet Jagan remained under observation yesterday in a private room at the St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Georgetown, the Office of the President reported.

A statement from the office said medical evaluation yesterday revealed further improvement in her condition.

"The initial symptoms that caused her hospitalisation have finally disappeared. However, the President will remain under observation for the next 24 hours", the statement said.

A source said she was doing much better and looked "very comfortable" yesterday.

Her daughter, Mrs. Nadira Jagan-Brancier, was among close family members visiting her yesterday, the office said.

The President also spoke briefly with her son, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Jr., it said.

It announced that on the advice of the doctors for continued rest, President Jagan will not be attending the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government meeting opening in Trinidad tomorrow.

Foreign Minister, Mr. Clement Rohee will head Guyana's delegation to the summit, the statement said.

President Jagan, 79, was admitted to the hospital Wednesday night with "complaints of ill-defined and persistent body pains."

Sources said the President may have suffered a suspected angina problem and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit from which she was transferred to the private room Thursday afternoon.
