Miss Guyana organiser stands by judges decision

ORGANISER of the Miss Guyana/Universe 1999 pageant, Mr. Sri Yoogeandra, is denying a report in another newspaper yesterday that he was against the decision of the judges in last Saturday night's contest.

"The judges' decision is final", he told the Chronicle, adding that he met the winner, Miss Morvinia Sobers, yesterday, to assure her she will be representing Guyana at the Miss Universe contest in Trinidad and Tobago on May 26.

Yoogeandra said he was working to prepare Sobers for Guyana's first participation in a Miss Universe pageant.

He said Sobers was a "fairly competitive model" with "stage dynamism" for Miss Universe and is arranging for her to get special sessions, especially in preparation for the question and answer segment of the competition.

"I really want the best for her; based on all the setbacks, pluses and minuses, she can do well if (she is) well attuned...with international affairs", the organiser said.

The report in the other newspaper yesterday claimed Yoogeandra was questioning the judges' decision to award Sobers the crown and that another contestant should have been the winner.

In a letter to the newspaper, the organiser, however, said, "...at no time did I mention that (another contestant) should have been adjudged the winner on the final question and I consider the judges' decision final."

Yoogeandra said he and others involved in the contest yesterday met Sobers and he assured her that he had never suggested that another delegate should have won.

"I assured her she would be going to Trinidad to represent her country", he added.

The organiser said the Government should come forward and help and he plans to formally approach officials to prepare the delegate for the Miss Universe contest.

"Guyanese need to rally around the delegate at this time...we have too many petty things that keep us divided in this country", Yoogeandra said.

"...everyone else is thinking that they should have been doing it, when it should have been all of us together...everybody wants the glory", he added.
