Guyanese still detained in U.S.

THE Guyana Embassy in Washington yesterday said seven of the eight Guyanese held in the United States were still in detention following investigations into the September 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.

One of the eight, Rehman Sabir Khan, was released on bond on November 14, it said.

The embassy released the following information on the eight detained by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) noting that the information was provided by the Department of State and that to date, the INS has not communicated with the embassy on this matter:

Ambassador Dr. Odeen Ishmael said the embassy does not have any more details on the detainees and did not know where they were picked up or where they were living.

Relatives of the men have also not contacted the embassy on the matter, he said.

It appeared that six of them may have entered the country illegally, another was picked up without travel documents and the third had a student visa but was not attending school, he said.

The Guyanese are among hundreds of others rounded up in the U.S. by the INS in further investigations into the September 11 events in the U.S.
