UNIVERSAL Airlines Incorporated (UAI) yesterday launched its service with an inaugural flight to New York using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

First Lady Varshnie Jagdeo cut the ceremonial ribbon at the launching at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Mr. Manzoor Nadir, in brief remarks, praised the initiative by the private sector.

He noted that despite the decline in the aviation service and the airline industry worldwide, UAI has "achieved major success" by establishing the company and assured the airline that the Government is open to competition.

"We do not have a policy of close ties and, if someone else wants to do it (airline operations), they will have a chance.

"We understand the economics of filling a plane. We also understand that Guyana is poised for takeoff where tourism is concerned and we are looking to improve those numbers significantly," he said.

"An integral part of our portfolio, with tourism as its main component, is access to the market, and that is why you are so important to Guyana, because you are providing the access for those persons who want to travel to and from Guyana," he told officials of the airline.

Nadir also challenged staff to remain courteous and professional at all times and to maintain efficiency.

Guyana recently signed on to a massive programme to market the country in the Caribbean.

The minister assured airline officials that the Government is willing to work with all players to improve the tourism industry.

UAI President, Mr. Sudarshan Singh said the company is well structured and has "much fun to offer."

He said the aim of the company is to "place Guyana on the map of the world and soon there would be major expansions of flights to other parts of the globe."
