THE year 2000 will be recorded in the annals as a year with outstanding achievements in the education sector.

Minister of Education Dr. Dale Bisnauth in an interview with the Guyana Information Services (GIS) highlighted the many achievements of 2000.

"Undoubtedly the major achievement would have been the opening of the Berbice Campus of the University of Guyana," Dr. Bisnauth declared. Reminiscing on the difficulties leading up to the opening of the Berbice Campus, the Education Minister noted that for some time it seemed that the Campus would not have been able to open its doors to students. "Thank heavens we were able to solve those problems," the Minister added.

He described the establishment of the Essequibo Technical Institute as an outstanding achievement.

The Essequibo Technical Institute is located in Anna Regina and is scheduled to be commissioned during this month.

The completion and the opening of the state-of-the-art Celeste Dolphin Studio at NCERD, in the City, also took the spotlight as an outstanding achievement for 2000.

The studio is equipped to upgrade its production quality as well as to enlarge its programmes in Distance Education training for teachers, the Minister added.

"The Ministry is proud of the new studio,"

Dr. Bisnauth said. He added that another landmark achievement was the opening of the Computer Laboratories at the Tagore Memorial School, Corentyne, and in Christianburg, Linden.

The Computer Laboratory at the Tagore Memorial School, which was commissioned on February 26, 2000, has 14 computers available for students.
