Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), the governing body of local professional boxing, yesterday announced it will bring home World Boxing Association World Welterweight champion, Andrew `Six Heads' Lewis to a hero's welcome, complete with a motorcade.

The announcement was contained in a release to congratulate the new National hero on winning the first ever World title for Guyana.

"It is the opinion of the Board that Andrew Lewis' achievement has bolstered the sport of boxing in Guyana," the release stated.

The GBBC, also, expressed confidence that Wayne `Big Truck' Braithwaite, Raul Frank and Andre Purlette will become world champions during this year, making Guano "more than proud."

GBBC president K.D. Persaud and treasurer Andrew Thorne were at the side of Lewis in Las Vegas for the historic occasion Saturday night. They were also with him when opponent James Page failed to turn up at `weigh-in' for the first scheduled encounter.

The GBBC acknowledged the moral support of the government by the presence of Minister of Sport, Gail Teixeira, in Las Vegas.

"It can be the beginning of their much-needed support for professional boxing in Guyana," the GBBC declared.

"The Board is hopeful that the government would now consider to give financial, moral and other support to professional boxing," the GBBC said.

The GBBC said it was "jubilant" when President Bharrat Jagdeo declared a National holiday and pledged a house and land in honour of Six Heads' achievement.

Special thanks were extended to Lewis' former manager and promoter Compton Beckles, promoter Keith Bazilio, close boxing supporters and other persons for their effort, financial contribution, assistance for the boxer to get into the USA to "pursue excellence" in the sport.

More expressions of thanks were directed to North American Airlines for sponsoring half of the air fares for Persaud and Thorne for the trip to Las Vegas to give support to Lewis.
