Tables turned in Children's Mashramani competition

MOST of the city schools that had dominated in previous years were toppled from the top spots yesterday in the Children's Mashramani and Dramatic Poetry competition at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Homestretch Avenue.

The audience at this segment of the run-up to the February 23 republic anniversary celebrations was treated to excellent physical displays and very creative and dramatic poetry, most of which dealt with social issues in Guyana.

Kingston Nursery copped first position in the individual Dramatic Poetry segment, represented by Kadisha Daniels with her presentation `Georgetown is Mad'.

In second place was Deochand Mahadeo of Albouystown Nursery who recited 'Barn Guyanese' and in third spot was Stella Maris, represented by Tamash Maraj with 'Cassava Bread'.

In the group segment, Kingston Nursery placed first with its 'Beggar Woman'; second was Smyth Street Nursery with 'Mr Ben' and Precious Jewels in third place with 'Mash Outfit'.

In the 5-7 dramatic poetry group category, Rama Krishna Primary took first place with its presentation of 'Everything I do the monkey can do' and St Sidwell's Primary came in second with 'The cent in the ceiling'.

There was no third place winner in this category.

For the group segment, Tonia Bowman of Stella Maris copped first prize with her 'Boom Boom Fiya'. Winfer Gardens placed second, represented by Alana Singh with her rendition of 'Come into my Tropical Garden'. West Ruimveldt came in third with 'Our Flag' recited by Denisha Dates.

Stella Maris Primary placed first in the 8-10 individual category, represented by Shellon Benjamin with her presentation of 'Wah Happen in Dis Place'. Enneke Simon of Winfer Gardens Primary who performed 'The Witch' placed second; followed by West Ruimveldt Primary student Kavisha Peiarce who recited 'Homework'.

'Song of the Banana Man' performed by the students of Ketley Primary in the 8-10 group, placed first.

Redeemer Primary which did Mashramani was second and Bel Air Primary had to be content with third position with its piece 'Down in the Ghetto'.

In the 11-13 individual category, Rama Krishna Primary placed first with 'Mash in Guyana' performed by Karen Ramsden; West Ruimveldt came in second with Jason Johnson who performed 'A Negro Labourer in Liverpool'' and Freeburg Secondary, represented by Natasha Farinah, who recited a piece on 'Drugs', placed third.

Results of the 11-13 group; the 14-17 group and 14-17 individual for the dramatic poetry were not immediately available.

In the nursery group physical display segment, Kingston Nursery's 'Exercising in the Sun' was given the judges' nod for first place.

Smyth Street came in second with its display 'Keep Fit Kids'. And South Road placed third with its presentation 'Keeping Fit in 2001'.

In the individual and combination categories, there were only two entrants, Marian Academy which copped first place and Stella Maris in second.

South Ruimveldt Primary which performed 'Millennium Mad Bull' in the Combination and Pyramid sections placed first.

They were followed by Mae's Under 12 students who showed the audience how to 'Keep Fit' and St Sidwell's Primary was third with 'Hopping Fit', both in the Combination section.

In the individual segment, St Angela's Primary, the only entry placed first.

Results for the other segments 11-13 group and individual and 14-17 group and individual were not available.

The semi-finals for the Georgetown district conclude today with the calypso contest.
