POLICE Commissioner Laurie Lewis has given instructions for the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police Force to monitor television programmes that "create public mischief".

These include `Talk Show' programmes which invite public `call-ins' and air statements that are "clearly provocative and inflammatory in content, racist and have the potential for...inviting public disorder".

In a statement yesterday, Lewis said the Police will not hesitate in taking "appropriate and condign action to enforce the law where breaches have clearly occurred".

He is appealing to the owners, proprietors and managers of television stations to ensure that programmes broadcast on their stations, regardless of the source of production, conform with the law.

Lewis said programmes must adhere to the recently published Code of Conduct for the media which has been approved by the Chairman of the Elections Commission.

He noted that over the last few days, a number of responsible citizens have been expressing grave concern about the recent accusatory statements issued by a political party, suggesting an attempt to commit criminal action by a member of another political party.

"As Commissioner, I consider it my duty to appeal to all political parties to be cautious when making statements or issuing public announcements which may be construed or are likely to be construed to cause undue or unnecessary fear and apprehension," Lewis stated.

He said it is imperative that the Police be supplied with information, especially if it is intended for disclosure to the public.
