HOUSING and Water Minister, Mr Shaik Baksh yesterday announced that the government has met its target of allocating 20,000 house lots this year.

He also reported that for the first time new housing schemes have been established in each of the 10 regions of the country.

This has brought the total number of new housing schemes to be established by the government since 1993 to more than 90, he said.

Baksh's good news came as he helped distribute some 800 house lots for the Enmore-Haslington Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara.

This new housing scheme provides for 800 house lots, for middle and low income groups, and commercial lots, play fields, schools and health centres, he said.

The main beneficiaries are from the surrounding villages of Enmore, Haslington, Cove and John and Victoria.

Baksh also noted that grading the land has been completed and infrastructural works will be started next month.

He said these include main access bridges, drainage system and structures, seven roads, and water distribution networks with individual house connections.

Baksh stated that top priority for year 2001 is the provision of electricity to the housing schemes and squatter settlements.

The minister also announced that with such a massive distribution of house lots in which the social needs of the people for shelter are being met, there is no need for squatting and sterner measures will be taken against this illegal activity in the new year.

He congratulated those getting house lots yesterday and urged them to form a representative committee to ensure a sustainable, safe, secure and healthy housing development.

The government has made tremendous strides in recent years in its committed effort to ensure that every Guyanese has a house lot.
