RIGHTS of Children (ROC) will host `Ethnic Vibrations' beginning at 16:00 hours today at Thirst Park.

Guyanese are invited to attend the event and learn more about the cultural strands which make up the culture of this nation, stated a press release from ROC.

"Reinforcing the idea that all of our culture belongs to all of us, members of the public are encouraged to come to the event wearing any ethnic fashion of their choice," the statement added.

During the months of July and August, ROC conducted a Community Challenge Campaign through which teams of young people participated in various events designed to promote racial harmony.

Each team undertook one of 14 challenges contained in a Campaign Kit designed and produced by ROC.

Challenges included signature campaigns, mural paintings, producing 30-second radio or television commercials, composing inter-ethnic music and dances, and multi-cultural displays.

Some of the most outstanding challenges undertaken by the groups will be presented at Ethnic Vibrations today, the statement said.

Ms Tishana Sweatnham, one of ROC's members, described the event as reinforcing the idea in today's generation of being proud Guyanese.

"Our ancestors may have come from India, China, Africa and elsewhere, but we didn't. We come from Guyana."

"We have to get over the idea of Emancipation being only a celebration for Afro-Guyanese or Heritage Month only for Amerindians, or Diwali as an Indo-Guyanese celebration".

"We should all celebrate such festivals as strands in one rich culture, which belongs to all of us," Coordinator of ROC, Anna Florendo stated in the release.

Also to be showcased at Ethnic Vibrations are the talents of popular Guyanese performers Henry Rodney, Rudy Pateedeo, Miriam Williams, Prince Wazir, the Couchman family, along with young dancers from the Dance School and stage performers from across the country.

Persons will also be taught turban and sari wrapping and Amerindian body painting.

'Harmony Messages' will provide visitors with an opportunity to have their messages etched and varnished into murals.

Tickets for this event cost $100 for adults and $40 for children and are available at Bonny's Supermarket, Bish and Sons Supermarket in Albert Street, Shell Gas Station on Vlissengen Road, C&F Meat Centre at the Harbour View Mall and the Guyana Human Rights Centre on Brickdam.
