COMMONWEALTH Heads of Government have expressed firm support for, and solidarity with the Government and people of Guyana in the maintenance of their territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The Commonwealth Secretariat is preparing to convene the first meeting of the Ministerial Group on Guyana, as the Government of the day continues to receive support from the international community for the preservation of Guyana's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

A press statement from the Guyana Foreign Ministry last night indicated that the decision to establish the group is in accordance with an agreement taken by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their Summit in Durban, South Africa in November 1999.

At that meeting the Commonwealth Secretary-General was mandated to establish the Ministerial Group on Guyana.

The group was constituted subsequent to consultations by the Secretary General, Mr Don McKinnon. It includes Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Guyana's High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, at the invitation of the Commonwealth Secretariat, will on Friday, August 18 meet with his counterparts from the countries which comprise the Ministerial Group on Guyana.

These members will be briefed on the latest developments relating to the preservation of Guyana's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

That meeting will be held in London and it will be followed by the First Ministerial Meeting to be held in New York in September, this year.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee is expected to participate in this meeting.
