Emancipation Day greetings from President

Guyana Chronicle
August 1, 2000

THE valiant struggles of slaves for their freedom inspired the fight for the eventual liberation of the nation, President Bharrat Jagdeo says in a message to mark Emancipation Day today.

His message reads:

"The Government of Guyana joins with all Guyanese, especially our Afro-Guyanese brothers and sisters in celebrating Emancipation Day 2000.

Slavery undoubtedly was one of the worst travesties in human history and despite centuries of efforts to kill the spirit of rebellion, the indomitable spirit of those enslaved brought freedom.

Our Afro-Guyanese brothers and sisters celebrate this occasion with all other Guyanese who are today working together to build a great and free country - Guyana.

This inhumane system brought out in our enslaved foreparents the quest for total freedom, a higher standard of living, and a firm resolve to struggle for a just society.

The valiant struggles by slaves and their victory inspired the struggle of our people which eventually unshackled our nation from oppression and domination.

Emancipation Day will always remain the beginning of our long journey for freedom and national liberation.

Happy Emancipation Day to all Guyanese!"
