PEOPLE's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Councillor of the Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), wants local research carried out on the `noni' plant.

Councillor Mr Cornel Damon made the appeal at the recent meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC). He advised that the Ministry of Health begin scientific examination and research on the noni plant which Guyanese are using for the treatment of various ailments.

According to the Councillor, the plant can cause serious side effects which could have catastrophic implications for the country.

Mr Damon suggested that the Health Ministry should seek to restrict use of the noni plant until the relevant research into the health benefits of the plant and its fruit is completed.

All councillors were in support of Mr Damon's call.
