THE People's Progressive Party (PPP) yesterday commended the joint Police-Army exercise last week which resulted in the death of notorious bandit Linden `Blackie' London, but expressed concern at sections of the media which "openly side with criminals in every confrontation."

London who was wanted by the Police for the last 10 years for 14 robberies and at least two murders, was shot dead last Wednesday after an almost 12-hour siege at an Eccles, East Bank Demerara apartment building where he was holed up.

"The party commends both Police and Army ranks for a professionally executed operation in the battle against crime. Their foe was heavily armed and dangerous," a statement from the main arm of the governing PPP/Civic alliance said.

"To the extent that only minimal damage was done to property, despite the heavy weapons and explosive devices brought into play, and the loss of only two lives in a standoff lasting eleven hours, the operation could be described as successful and effectively executed.

"That operation gives the lie to the carping detractors of the Disciplined Forces", it said.

The PPP condemned the "irresponsibility and cheap sensationalism by certain media operatives to portray ruthless outlaws as heroes."

"This is a serious attack on the notion of justice and on public policy which demands tough action against criminals," the statement said.

The party said it rallies to the support of the Joint Forces whose ranks put their lives at risk and "bravely engaged a heavily armed bandit, well trained in warfare and weapon skills."

The PPP reiterated its determination to help fight crime in all aspects, particularly armed robberies, murder, corruption, illegal drugs, piracy and rape.

"The party will spare no effort in this resolve and thus fully supports the Police Force in this endeavour," the release said.

It further urged the government to spare no effort in providing the seriously wounded Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Private Lennox Harvey and the wounded Policeman Sherwin Smith, with the necessary medical attention and support.

"They are indeed worthy representatives of our law enforcement agencies," the release added.

"The party also looks forward to wide support from public spirited citizens as well as from judicial and magisterial quarters, in the overall fight against the scourge of crime", it said.
