SITUATION - APPEAL

1. RAIN CONTINUING. WATER REMAINS HIGH IN FLOODED AREAS.

2. SOME 28,000 PERSONS (7,000 FAMILIES) AFFECTED. NO INFORMATION YET AVAILABLE ABOUT AREAS IN SOUTHERN PART OF COUNTRY (ABOUT 35 PER CENT OF TOTAL SURFACE).

NATIONAL RESPONSE

3. NATIONAL DISASTER RELIEF UNIT (NDRU)PURSUES RELIEF EFFORTS. COOPERATION STRENGTHENED WITH DIFFERENT SECTORS CONCERNED.

4. WITH ASSISTANCE OF PAHO, MINISTRY OF HEALTH OVERSEES MEDICAL SITUATION IN ZONES AFFECTED.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

5. DHA/UNITED NATIONS DISASTER ASSESSMENT AND COORDINATION (UNDAC) TEAM WORKING CLOSELY WITH NDRU AND PARTICIPATING IN ASSESSMENT IN AFFECTED AREAS. DISASTER MANAGEMENT EXPERTISE MADE AVAILABLE TO GOVT OF GUYANA FROM UNITED STATES AND PAHO. TWO PHYSICIANS FROM DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS ARRIVED AND ALSO A REPRESENTATIVE OF INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF RED CROSS AND CRESCENT SOCIETIES.

8. DHA IS PREPARED TO SERVE AS A CHANNEL FOR CASH CONTRIBUTIONS TO BE USED DURING THE IMMEDIATE RELIEF PHASE. FUNDS ARE SPENT IN COORDINATION WITH RELEVANT ORGANIZATIONS OF THE UN SYSTEM, AND DHA PROVIDES DONOR GOVERNMENTS WITH WRITTEN CONFIRMATION ON UTILIZATION OF FUNDS CONTRIBUTED.

9.FUNDS SHOULD BE TRANSFERRED TO DHA ACCOUNT NO. CO.590.160.1 AT SWISS BANK CORPORATION, CASE POSTALE 2770, CH-1211 GENEVA 2, WITH REFERENCE: GUYANA - FLOODS, DHA GENEVA.
