SITUATION

1. HEAVY RAINS LIKELY TO CONTINUE FOR AT LEAST NEXT TWO WEEKS. AREAS FLOODED WILL REMAIN UNDER WATER FOR ABOUT A MONTH.

2. OUT OF SEVEN REGIONS AFFECTED, MAHAICA, MAHAICONY AND ABARY MOST SEVERELY HIT. MANY HOUSEHOLDS HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FROM THE FLOODS FOR ABOUT A MONTH ALREADY. AT PRESENT 16,000 PEOPLE ARE ESTIMATED TO BE IN NEED OF EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE.

3. DAMAGE TO CROPS UNDER ASSESSMENT.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

4. NATIONAL DISASTER RELIEF UNIT IN PRESIDENT'S OFFICE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR COORDINATION OF ALL RELIEF EFFORTS INCLUDING COOPERATION WITH INTERNATIONAL DONORS AND NGOS. DISASTER COUNCILS ESTABLISHED AT REGIONAL LEVEL.

5. RELIEF EFFORT IS FOCUSING ON DELIVERY OF FOOD RATIONS AND SERVICES OF MEDICAL TEAMS DISPATCHED TO THE AREAS AFFECTED.

6. PARTICULAR CONCERN FELT IN CONNECTION WITH DAM OF LAMAHA WATER CONSERVANCY BASIN. DAM IS UNDER HEAVY PRESSURE FROM ACCUMULATED FLOOD WATERS. DAMAGE TO DAM WOULD CAUSE FLOODING OF ADDITIONAL AREAS INCLUDING THE ONE WHERE IS LOCATED THE CAPITAL.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

7. AT REQUEST OF UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE, DHA IS SENDING AN UNDAC TEAM TO ASSIST IN THE ASSESSMENT OF RELIEF NEEDS.

8. WHO/PAHO IS REVIEWING MEDICAL NEEDS.

9. CARIBBEAN DISASTER EMERGENCY RESPONSE AGENCY (CDERA) HAS PLEDGED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO SUPPORT RELIEF EFFORTS AND INFORMED THE GOVT THAT IN-KIND ASSISTANCE COULD BE SENT FROM CARIBBEAN IF TRANSPORT COSTS COULD BE COVERED FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES.

10.GOVT OF SURINAME HAS INFORMED GOVT OF GUYANA OF EXPERTISE AVAILABLE IN AREAS OF PUBLIC HEALTH, EPIDEMIOLOGY, ENVIRONMENT AND SANITATION.

11. UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE WILL HOLD SECOND DONORS MEETING ON WEDNESDAY 17 JULY.

13. DHA IS PREPARED TO SERVE AS A CHANNEL FOR CASH CONTRIBUTIONS TO BE USED DURING THE IMMEDIATE RELIEF PHASE. FUNDS ARE SPENT IN COORDINATION WITH RELEVANT ORGANIZATIONS OF THE UN SYSTEM, AND DHA PROVIDES DONOR GOVERNMENTS WITH WRITTEN CONFIRMATION ON UTILIZATION OF FUNDS CONTRIBUTED.

14. FUNDS SHOULD BE TRANSFERRED TO DHA ACCOUNT NO. CO.590.160.1 AT SWISS BANK CORPORATION, CASE POSTALE 2770, CH-1211 GENEVA 2, WITH REFERENCE: CHINA - FLOODS, DHA GENEVA.
